“God alone is real and the goal of life is to be united with Him through love.”
– Meher Baba
Sufism Reoriented is an American spiritual order created by Meher Baba in 1952 to help Western seekers who aspire to live the highest principles of divine love as the central focus of their lives. The order is both a school of inner development and a community of shared outer life and work, guided by its spiritual director or murshida, Dr. Carol Weyland Conner. The title of murshida means “guide” or “teacher”. It denotes a level of spiritual insight and experience necessary to help students draw closer to God. The relationship of teacher and student is at the heart of the order’s life and work.
Sufism Reoriented is based on principles of universal love and selfless service – active love for God and active service to God’s world – in the knowledge that all life is One. The symbol of the order is the winged heart, in which Meher Baba placed the number “one”.
The winged heart emblazoned with the number one represents the transformative power of divine love, which raises all life higher. The one in the center refers to the one God, who is at the center and heart of all persons and things in Creation.
Meher Baba also recognized the core of divine love at the heart of the world’s religions (the “isms”) and characterized them as “beads on one string”. Sufism Reoriented affirms this understanding and strives to honor and work in harmony with all faiths.
